Animal Planet’s new series Ocean Warriors picks up where Whale Wars left off, following not just Sea Shepherd, but others who work to save the oceans.
Whale Wars, which mostly followed Sea Shepherd’s efforts to stop Japanese whaling in the Southern Ocean, aired eight seasons and two specials on Animal Planet from 2008 to 2015. It was exceptional, thrilling television that you can now watch online or via DVD.
Animal Planet will not air a Whale Wars season 8 this year, while Sea Shepherd has turned its attention toward battling Japanese whalers in court. While Whale Wars was a network-defining show, Animal Planet actually hasn’t aired a full season since 2012. Here’s what changed.
Whale Wars season 7 debuts tonight, and unlike last year’s one-night special, the outstanding Animal Planet series is actually three episodes, all three of which air back to back tonight. They follow Sea Shepherd on last winter’s “Operation Relentless” campaign in the Southern Ocean to stop Japanese whaling. Sea Shepherd’s Peter Hammarstedt was the primary subject of last year’s… continue reading
Whale Wars returns tonight, and the two-hour special, “A Commander Rises,” concludes with an incredible confrontation that is more intense than most things I’ve seen on scripted shows this year. There’s also an online “episode”: Blood and Water, which is not about this season of Survivor but instead about the conflict that has fueled the… continue reading
Whale Wars sixth season will consist only of a two-hour special that will air Dec. 13 on Animal Planet, following four Sea Shepherd boats as they attempted to stop Japanese whaling last winter, though this time without leadership from the organization’s founder, Paul Watson. The special will debut about six months after new seasons typically… continue reading
Oscar-winning documentary The Cove, which followed former Flipper trainer Ric O’Barry’s efforts to expose dolphin slaughter, inspired Sea Shepherd’s actions in Japan to shift from trying to release captured dolphins to simply document what’s happening, including live streaming from the cove. Meanwhile, as to the group’s most famous effort–stopping Japanese whaling in the Antarctic, which… continue reading
The Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals has declared Sea Shepherd “pirates” and ordered them to stay away from Japanese whaling vessels two days after a Sea Shepherd boat collided with Japanese boats. Sea Shepherd had been previously ordered by that court to stay 500 yards from Japanese vessels. The court reversed a lower court’s decision… continue reading
Footage for the next season of Whale Wars may be shot by camera operators and producers hired by Sea Shepherd, the organization the show covers, according to an ad it posted. Sea Shepherd leaves Saturday for its campaign Operation Zero Tolerance, which includes four ships, including the new SSS Sam Simon, and drones to search… continue reading
Whale Wars star and Sea Shepherd founder Paul Watson is now an internationally wanted fugitive, as Interpol has issued a wanted notice for him after he fled Germany, where he was jailed and then released on bail after Costa Rica issued an arrest warrant and requested extradition. That’s over an incident that took place during… continue reading
We’ve seen Animal Planet’s Whale Wars break the fourth wall before, primarily when a camera operator put down his camera, fearing he’d drown. But like when Whale Wars: Viking Shores included footage of some random blowhard next to Paul Watson on the deck of the Steve Irwin, the show has also shown crew members of… continue reading
The “this season on” trailer for Whale Wars‘ fifth season, which aired at the end of its first episode on Friday, may be have the most frightening preview of a reality TV season ever, and I remember when we learned that a contestant would poop on the floor of a mansion. The Animal Planet series… continue reading
After a ridiculously fast season, six hours over four weeks, Whale Wars: Viking Shores concludes tonight with two back-to-back episodes, having taken us into the minds of Sea Shepherd’s activists to find its drama. (Alas, Sea Shepherd founder and captain Paul Watson won’t be able to watch, as he’s in a German jail facing extradition… continue reading
Tonight at 9 p.m. ET, Animal Planet debuts Whale Wars: Viking Shores, a quasi-spin-off of its series that follows activists Sea Shepherd as they try to stop pilot whale hunts in the Faroe Islands. Although there won’t be the same kinds of violent conflicts that occur in the Southern Ocean, there will still be drama,… continue reading
The spin-off of Whale Wars that follows Sea Shepherd’s actions last summer in the Faroe Islands will debut next month, and has been given the subtitle “Viking Shores,” perhaps because the name of its setting, the Faroe Islands, isn’t as sexy or well-known as Vikings are. (Vikings once colonized the 18-island nation, which is between… continue reading
To most viewers, Jeff Rice was a name that flashed by in a second during the credits at the end of an episode of a favorite reality series, such as Destination Truth, Whale Wars, or The Amazing Race. But as a facilitating producer, he helped made it possible for those shows to film in remote… continue reading
