Jury Duty, and the 13 other 2023 TCA Award winners

The Television Critics Association just announced its 2023 TCA Award winners, including in the two unscripted categories.

The 2023 TCA Awards were not presented in person, as the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes are ongoing. Without the labor of the writers and actors currently on strike, the shows and performances we’ve honored would not exist.

Full disclosure: As the TCA’s secretary (and now, its newly elected vice president), I helped coordinate the awards, but as a member, I had just one vote like everyone else.

In the News and Information category, which often includes televised documentaries and documentary series, The U.S. and the Holocaust won.

The three-part series, directed by Ken Burns, Lynn Novick, and Sarah Botstein, focused on the United States’ response to the Holocaust. It’s streaming via PBS’s Passport and available on DVD.

In the reality TV category, my beloved The Traitors—which I think is the best new reality TV competition format in years—was defeated by Jury Duty, the sitcom with an unscripted center.

I’m a little disappointed, but also appreciate how much people loved and laughed at Jury Duty, which is an obvious spiritual successor to The Joe Schmo Show, still one of the best reality shows ever.

Other winners include The Bear, for its first season; Ms. Marvel, in a brand-new category; and The Carol Burnett Show for its past achievement. The full list of nominees is below, with winners in bold and highlighted.
