Two of CBS’s longest-running reality competitions, The Amazing Race and Survivor, will be paired together for the first time.
Both shows had previously been renewed, so their return is not news, but when the network announced its fall 2022 schedule today, it included the news that both will air on the same night during the same time of year.
Amazing Race and Survivor have, of course, overlapped on some nights in the past. For example, back in 2019, TAR 31 premiered in mid-April, and aired on the same night as Survivor: Edge of Extinction for four weeks.
But they’ve never aired full seasons at the same time, on the same night.
That’s because Amazing Race has been whipped around CBS’s schedule over the years, while Survivor stayed constant: first on Thursdays, now Wednesdays.
CBS did schedule the two to air together in the fall of 2020, but as the network’s executives admitted, that was a “hopeful,” “highly unlikely” schedule.
CBS’s fall 2022 Wednesday nights

CBS’s Wednesday nights will now be a three-hour block of reality TV:
- Survivor 43 at 8 p.m. ET/PT
- Amazing Race 34 at 9 p.m. ET/PT
- The Real Love Boat, a new reality TV version of the show, at 10 p.m. ET/PT
Because I can’t just be satisfied, I kind of wish CBS would have experimented with 90-minute episodes of both TAR and Survivor, but this is exciting.
CBS described the night like this:
Two iconic reality series lead into a new unscripted romance adventure competition inspired by “The Love Boat.” The groundbreaking hit series SURVIVOR, hosted by Jeff Probst, kicks off the night at 8:00 PM. At 9:00 PM, the globe-trotting, Emmy Award-winning THE AMAZING RACE hosted by Phil Keoghan returns, leading into the new romance adventure competition THE REAL LOVE BOAT at 10:00 PM. Set aboard a luxury cruise ship in the Mediterranean, the show caps an exhilarating night of unscripted television.

CBS has not yet announced actual premiere dates for Amazing Race 34 or Survivor 43, but they’ll likely be in mid-September.
Typically, Survivor’s premiere airs on the same night as Big Brother’s finale, so if that happens again this season, it’s possible Amazing Race and Love Boat would have their premieres a week after Survivor’s
But with this new three-hour block of reality TV, I also wouldn’t be surprised if CBS premiered all three on the same night, leaving Big Brother to end on its own.
CBS will have no other reality TV shows on its fall schedule, though it is now calling 48 Hours a “true-crime docuseries,” which, okay, fine.
Meanwhile, season four of Phil Keoghan’s other great series, Tough As Nails, was already filmed in late 2021, but it does not yet have a premiere date. Nor do CBS’s other recently announced unscripted shows, Superfan and RuPaul’s new/old game show.

Ooooo... 90 minute episodes!!! I think that has done wonders for Project Runway and. I think, it would do a lot for Survivor and TAR.

To be clear, they're not doing that. That's just my hopes and dreams.

The scheduling of an "all reality" Wednesday amuses me. Obviously CBS has a real problem at 10:00 (9 Midwest). They couldn't come up with anything better than Love Boat? Wow. Seems to be the Love Boat should be put on after Big Brother during the summer to see how it does. Remember Survivor started in the summer.
My worry is that TAR will suffer because Love Boat will perform poorly. I could be wrong, I hope.

I totally agree about 90 minute Survivor episodes. I've noticed this season particularly, they're posting a lot of really good deleted scenes on EW. I wish they could find time for those in the show. And then we could have the opening sequence back too!

CBS should renew Beyond the Edge which was really exciting to watch. They should stop airing stupid old shows like the Love Boat. Give me a break!!! There's also too many police shows. Bring back Beyond the Edge!!!

@Emac, Interesting.. I tried watching Beyond, but the moment Domino Masters came on, I dropped Beyond. I tried watching the finale, but I couldn't.

@Emac, I agree; Beyond the Edge was really good. I'd love to see another season. I don't know what celebrities would sign up for it though, because it looked really hard!

Perhaps this gives them the chance to do something I've always wanted to see: The Amazing Race teams fly into Fiji and participate in a combined reward challenge with Survivors. Survivor winners get reward, TAR winners get the first flight out, or something along those lines. Having them on the same night allows producers to minimize spoilers of one show by watching the other.

@Andy Dehnart, That Real World crossover was exactly what gave me the idea many, many years ago. I wish they would make it happen. Big Brother doesn't give it the option since it's filmed basically live (unless it was the first episode of TAR), whereas TAR and Survivor could make it happen.

That'd be a fun crossover—kind of like Road Rules invading The Real World Miami house. Alas, Survivor 43 is already done filming!
