CBS has renewed its two legacy reality series, Survivor and Amazing Race, and its newest competition show, Tough As Nails, for new seasons that will air during the 2022-2023 television season.
That means we’ll get Survivor 43 and Amazing Race 34 in the fall or next spring.
Also returning to CBS is Secret Celebrity Renovation, which has added Survivor winner Rob Mariano to “the design team alongside returning interior designer Sabrina Soto,” CBS said.
Information about each series’ renewal are below, including BB24—plus the possibility of just one Survivor season next year, and details about an already-filmed season of Tough As Nails.
TAR 34

CBS renewed The Amazing Race saying that it “delivered 5.42 million viewers this past season. The series’ streaming viewership is up +93% on Paramount+ from its prior season.”
Its premiere date is not clear, but it will film soon.
The Amazing Race’s casting site says TAR 34 is “scheduled to start filming around May 2022 for approximately 25-30 days.”
Tough As Nails 4 and 5
The Tough As Nails announcement said the show “averages 3.57 million viewers,” but didn’t specify if that’s over one season or its preceding three seasons.
Tough As Nails season 4 already filmed late last year, but this renewal is for season 5, according to a tweet from the show.
Since the season 5 renewal is for 2022-2023, I hope that means season 4 will come first (this summer, after Survivor?), and then we’ll get a season five next year.
Survivor 43 and 44

CBS said Survivor “is a top 25 broadcast, delivering 7.59 million viewers in the fall,” and “is CBS’ most-streamed reality series on Paramount+, with streaming viewership up +199% from its prior fall season.”
Curiously, the announcement didn’t explicitly say that Survivor will return for two seasons, although it typically films two seasons back-to-back in the spring.
The announcement said “CBS has renewed four of its popular unscripted series for the 2022-2023 broadcast season,” which could mean two seasons for Survivor, as usual.
However, the casting site‘s home page only refers to season 43, saying, “We will be taping season 43 sometime between mid May, 2022 and early July, 2022.”
The FAQ, however, contradicts that “Filming dates are tentative for the next two seasons. They will be the end of April for Survivor 43 and the first week of June for Survivor 44.”
Could we possibly get just one Survivor season next year?
Probably not: Jeff Probst posted on Instagram with a caption saying “we got the official greenlight for two more seasons. Survivor 43 and Survivor 44 coming your way soon!”
I just find it strange that CBS didn’t publicly say that.
BB24 and Love Island

In terms of CBS’s summer reality TV, Big Brother 24 was announced early last fall.
Meanwhile, CBS lost Love Island to Peacock, so Love Island will be back this summer, just not on CBS.

"They will be the end of April for Survivor 43 and the first week of June for Survivor 44.”
Not much turnaround time there between the end of 43 and start of 44. Sounds like they're staying with a shorter-than-39-day schedule. I guess that's going to be permanent. Last season it felt like we never really got to know the players, but the new episode addressed that a bit, so maybe they're finding a new balance.
I love your site and your columns. I wrote recaps for Reality News Online many moons ago, so I understand how much work it is and how hard the quick turnaround time can be. Thanks for doing it - your articles are great! :o)
