Joe Millionaire, Fox’s Bachelor parody, will return to Fox in 2022, 19 years after it first aired, with a modified format that won’t include lying to the cast—well, unless Fox is lying to us.
Season three will be called Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer.
While a revival of Joe Millionaire was not something anyone was clamoring for, I will give Fox credit for finding a way to add yet another guessing-game reality show to its air that is not just another dead-eyed clone of The Masked Singer.
The first season, which was hosted by Trading Space’s season-one host Alex McLeod and butlered by Paul Hogan, had one bachelor, Evan Marriott, who pretended to be a millionaire who was worth $50 million.
It featured lots of drama and also subtitled oral sex.
At the end, Evan revealed his actual career to the woman he chose, Zora Andrich, and they were surprised by a $1 million prize that they split.
The finale of season one was watched by 34.6 million viewers, a number that still excites Fox executives, as the press release pointed out that “the Season One finale episode remains the highest-rated and most-watched unscripted entertainment series telecast of the past two decades (excluding post-NFL).”
A second season did not do anywhere near as well. Hosted by future Dancing with the Stars co-host Samantha Harris, it was cast with European women who were unfamiliar with the U.S. show, and featured a ranch hand from Texas pretending to be an oil baron.
Fox’s 2022 Joe Millionaire has two bachelors
The new season is titled Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer, and that points to its twist. Instead of one bachelor, there are two.
Fox says they are “two incredible single men…with one HUGE difference”—one has a massive penis. Oh wait, no: “One’s a millionaire, and the other is definitely NOT,” Fox says.
Fox also said:
“Twenty women will date both of them, but they will have no idea which Joe is rich. As love connections are made and each guy finds his perfect match, the women must ask themselves what is more important…Love or Money?”
How exactly the season will play out is unclear, but it’s being produced by Jersey Shore creator SallyAnn Salsano, who has recent experience with a two-person dating show, Double Shot at Love with DJ Pauly D & Vinny.
A trailer Fox released shows the new butler telling the women, “One of these men is worth over $10 million; the other is not. Who is who?” So it seems like there won’t be a surprise element to the show, unless there is a twist that’s being hidden from us.
The new season will premiere in January, and based on the trailer, has completed production.
