American Idol has been renewed for its 17th season, and the second to air on ABC. Katy Perry, Lionel Richie, and Luke Bryan will return as judges, and Ryan Seacrest will, alas, also return.
While ratings are down from its previous life on Fox, it has been performing well for ABC and it’s one of the most popular shows on TV right now. (Last week, its Sunday episode was the second-most-watched show.)
In its press release, ABC noted that the show “has finished as Sunday’s No. 1 entertainment broadcast series on each of its 8 telecasts this season in Live + Same Day Adults 18-49.” ABC said that, including DVR usage, the Sunday episodes are averaging 9.3 million viewers.
ABC’s release said it’s been renewed for 2018-2019, but didn’t give a more specific sense of when the next season would air.
“I am thrilled that Katy, Luke, Lionel and Ryan will be back to once again embark on this Idol journey with us to discover the next crop of inspiring talent,” ABC Entertainment president Channing Dungey said in the press release.
