If you follow Shark Tank star and FUBU founder Daymond John on Twitter, you’ll be familiar with his early-morning posts that always have the same three words: “Rise and Grind.”

I always find those posts both inspiring and a little insufferable—especially because at 6:45 a.m., I often don’t feel like doing half of that. Of course, I know he’s right; it’s a reminder that success takes work, and lots of it.

On Jan. 23, Daymond’s philosophy and mantra also became the title of his book, Rise and Grind: Outperform, Outwork, and Outhustle Your Way to a More Successful and Rewarding Life, and a companion podcast.

In the introduction, Daymond writes that “this is a book about spending [your time and attention] productively, meaningfully, purposefully.” He takes his philosophy and, that means  not binge-watching TV shows—or watching TV at all.

It’s not his first book (there were others), and this book, which was co-written with Daniel Paisner, includes both insight from Daymond and other successful people he talks to about their routines, including Catherine Zeta-Jones; Russell Simmons; Wendy Williams; Joel Osteenl; and Tyler, the Creator.

Daymond writes that he’s “hoping the stories and strategies of the people profiled here will inspire you to move the needle in your own lives and careers.”

The first 23 pages, the introduction and the first part of chapter one, are available for free download from this page on his web site.

Or if you want a preview of his principles, Daymond did a live broadcast on Facebook yesterday in which he highlighted one of the early points from the book, and started by talking about both Black Panther and Black History Month.
