Why you probably aren’t seeing this story on Facebook

Facebook is again changing the news feed, and if you rely on Facebook to show you news or stories from publications and websites that you like—such as this one!—you may be affected.

That’s because, as The New York Times reported, today “Facebook introduced sweeping changes to the kinds of posts, videos and photos that its more than two billion members will see most, saying on Thursday that it would prioritize what their friends and family share and comment on while de-emphasizing content from publishers and brands.”

So what does this mean?

While I do have a Facebook page, I did not have time, energy, and resources to try to constantly chase Facebook, first with articles and then with video, and I feel bad for those media companies that did and now find themselves to be absolutely screwed.

But I’m writing this because I think the expectation for some people is that clicking like or follow means that you’ll see posts from that page, and that just won’t be the case any more—and actually, things have been changing for a while.

More than 8,000 of you have liked or followed reality blurred on Facebook over the years. But Facebook usually shows new posts to about a quarter of that group—and that just means it appears in the news feed, not that you actually read it or click on it. However, Facebook does conveniently and constantly offers me the opportunity to pay them to show a post to more of you. (I decline.)

So! How can you make sure you don’t miss a reality blurred story? Besides bookmarking and coming to the site every day, which I realize is something that most of us haven’t done for years, here are two options:

Please do keep sharing stories from reality blurred—and other publications—that you like and that you want to share with others.

Those will apparently still show up for your friends and family, and that helps. But this is Facebook’s world, and they might change things next week again.
