Music has the song of the summer. Movies have big summer tentpoles.
But even though reality TV dominates summer television ratings—17 of the top 25 shows last week were unscripted, not including sports—I’m not sure we have a similar way of talking about the biggest, best, or just the most fun reality television show.
Like summer movies and songs, I’d define the reality show of the summer as one that is both a fun and shared experience. It may be a show everyone in the country is watching, the show everyone in your office talks about the next day, the show you dissect with a community of strangers online, or the show you really must watch with your family every week.
I’m working on compiling my list of those kinds of shows: the most fun, escapist, joyful, shared reality shows of the summer. I’m just waiting for a few more entrants to debut before finalizing my list.
While I do that, I’d love to know: What’s your reality show of the summer so far? And why?
Tell me, below, anonymously! (If you need a refresher about what’s airing or what’s coming up, check the summer debut schedule.)
I’ll include the most frequently mentioned shows when I publish my list next week—and maybe I’ll find a show or two to check out that I haven’t yet been watching.
