Happy Friday, reality blurred readers. I just wanted to take this Friday morning to offer an expression of my ongoing gratitude.
There’s a lot in the media about how publishers of all sizes are struggling—and yes, with declining ad revenue, increased competition, and a glut of content to choose from, things certainly are more challenging. (Update: After this story published, I read that the beloved site The Toast is ceasing publication this summer, which is absolutely tragic. It’s a hard world for independent publishers, for sure.) As one example, all of the other media outlets/web sites that have offered to buy reality blurred over the years are now themselves out of business.
But to me, reality blurred is as strong as ever, and not just because you answer a few survey questions every week (though I do appreciate that so much—it helps keep the lights on!). Year-to-year, traffic is solidly up, and not, I hope, just because I occasionally write tongue-in-cheek obnoxious headlines like this one to get you to click.
Whether it’s a comment on a story or an e-mailed tip, constructive criticism or a thoughtful challenge to my perspective, or just the fact that you stop by every week or every day, I’m so grateful.
Because of that new reality for publishers, I also appreciate these things, which are also things you might want to do especially if you’re new here:
- Tell your friends about reality blurred, such as when you share a story on Facebook, e-mail it, or text a link. That’s the best kind of endorsement—thanks! And don’t stop!
- Like reality blurred on Facebook, our new media overlord. If you’ve already liked, don’t forget you can choose See First (just click that link and choose the Liked button) to make sure none of reality blurred’s stories escape you.
- Send a tip, link, or contribution of any kind. Since that very first summer of 2000, some of the best things I’ve written about have come directly from you. More to come very soon!
- Subscribe to Reality in Focus, my hand-crafted, periodic newsletter. Each issue always includes links to reality blurred stories you may have missed and a note from me. A new issue is going out today, so jump on board if you’re not already!
Thanks for all that, and just for spending a few minutes of your day reading these words. Thanks for being you and for being awesome.
Here’s a tarsier as thanks:
