Shark Week has a premiere date and a weird new promo

The Discovery Channel announced the dates for Shark Week 2016, which debuts Sunday, June 26, and continues through the following Sunday, July 3.

After abandoning fake documentaries, Shark Week rebounded creatively last year, and earned higher ratings as a result. More of the same seems to be on the way, based on Discovery’s announcement that previewed parts of this year’s event:

This year, SharkCam dives deeper than ever before and follows giant great whites into the dark ocean to record never-before-seen behaviors. For the first time ever, sharks will face off with dolphins, seals, crocodiles and even humans, as one science team finds themselves surrounded by a gang of large tiger sharks.

… Discovery Channel is working with nearly two dozen of the world’s most respected marine biologists and science institutions to reveal remarkable new insights into these magnificent creatures.

The theme, according to the press release, is “Shark ‘N’ Awe,” though judging by the new trailer, it’s more like “Hallucination Vacation.” It’s playful, sure, but also very strange.

There’s a mermaid! A dive inside a shark’s mouth! A circus-style ring of fire in the water! Divers riding on sharks! Sharks on waterslides inside another shark! It makes the Snuffy the Seal ads realistic and educational by comparison.

Discovery’s announcement says “Shark Week 2016 will entertain and inform Discovery Channel viewers while continuing to draw attention to the plight of sharks and the rising threats they face around the world,” but all that’s here is the entertainment. But hey, maybe this is how you get people to tune in to watch non-fake documentaries?
