A helicopter that was part of the production for MTV’s The Challenge has crashed in Argentina Saturday, killing the pilot and one other person. While it was traveling to a filming location for season 28 of The Challenge, neither person killed was a cast or crew member, according to the network.
The AP reported that the:
“helicopter crashed as it flew over the reservoir at Potrerillos Dam in Mendoza about 1,000km north-west of Buenos Aires, the security minister for Mendoza province, Gianni Vernier, told state news agency Télam. … Searchers were trying to reach the wreckage, which was about 60 metres (200ft) below the surface, he said.”
Argentina is the same country where two helicopters crashed earlier this year and killed 10 reality show cast members, including two Olympians, who were filming the French series Dropped.
An MTV statement cited by several publications said:
“The thoughts and prayers of all at MTV and Bunim/Murray are with those who lost their lives in this tragedy and their families during this difficult time.”
What season was being filmed?
Some media organizations, such as People, reported that “The show’s 28th season, The Challenge: The Rivals III was the cast that was in Argentina during the crash.”
Photos of the cast being filmed that season, The Challenge: The Rivals III, were taken more than a month ago in Mexico:

There were other photos from The Rivals III filming in Mexico, and a now-removed Wikipedia page for the season included the full cast and eliminations. An Instagram account unaffiliated with MTV posted the cast for The Rivals III three weeks ago:
Update: The final four teams moved to Argentina last week for the finale of The Rivals: III. Elimination spoilers posted at Vevmo by a user known as PinkRose identified the teams as shifting locations on Dec. 11.
