Thursday, two sports news web sites ran stories announcing a new TBS reality series following fans of the Green Bay Packers called, of course, Cheeseheads. However, the announcement is from the spring of 2013, when the show was only in development.
Both Fox Sports and CBS’ Sports 247Sports ran—and later deleted—stories about the announcement as if it was new and the show was going to air in the future. Fox Sports’ site still shows the story if you search for it; while the story is no longer on its site, Google’s cache of it survives: Reality TV show starring Packers fans to air on TBS.
The Fox Sports story cited and quoted from a May 2013 CBS Sports story about TBS’ announcement, but apparently its author (the story isn’t bylined) missed the date on that story. However, 247 Sports’ article, by Luke Rodgers, summarized the facts but didn’t attribute any of them, insisting that “the cable channel announced” the series.
No Cheeseheads reality show is in the works
I confirmed with TBS that they did not re-annouce the reality show, and Cheeseheads is not, alas, coming to the network. Though it seems like a documentary series about crazed football fans would be a terrific idea, the show never aired.
When TBS announced the show as part of its development slate on May 15, 2013, here’s how it was described:
Cheeseheads (working title)
Green Bay, Wis., is home to the World Famous Green Bay Packers and their fans: The Cheeseheads. These citizens don’t just bleed green and gold; they eat victory for breakfast. For them, being a Cheesehead is more than just being a fan. It’s a way of life. This show will take viewers into the hilarious subculture through the eyes of a group of proud Wisconsinites as they navigate life in the only way they know how – loud, proud and with lots of beer. For these folks, there is no off-season.
