An episode of Survivor easily beat an American Idol finale

American Idol 14We have now reached a point in reality television where the original reality behemoth, Survivor, has reclaimed its title over the show that dominated all of television for years: American Idol.

Yes, the 14th season finale of Idol, half of which aired opposite Survivor Worlds Apart, was easily beaten by the CBS series. Only 8.03 million viewers tuned in to watch Nick Fradiani win. Among people 18 to 49, the Idol finale’s 1.7 rating was down 38 percent. By comparison, the episode in which Dan was voted out of Survivor had a 2.3 and 9.61 million viewers.

It’s clear to see why American Idol has been cancelled, though it will still air one more season.

For sure, Survivor isn’t the same kind of ratings supernova it was at first or that Idol was for years, but it has stayed steady (and even grown some seasons) and remains solidly in the top 10.
