ABC cancels The Taste, renews Shark Tank spin-off

After three seasons, ABC has cancelled the Anthony Bourdain-hosted food competition series The Taste. After just one episode, ABC has renewed its Shark Tank spin-off Beyond the Tank.

ABC The Taste logoThe network has also renewed The Bachelor, Dancing with the Stars, and Shark Tank, as was to be expected.

The renewal for Beyond the Tank is perhaps more surprising, since it has aired just one episode, and only three have been produced. Last Friday’s debut started strong, retaining most of its lead-in audience, but it had mediocre reviews (including from me). We’ll see if it does the same tonight, too.

The Taste‘s cancellation is understandable (it was low-rated) but unfortunate primarily because it kept improving as a series. Producers made great changes to fix its first-season problems, and while season three’s two-hour episodes were too long for me, it concluded in January on a high note.

Naturally, that’s when I wrote that I hoped ABC turned it into one of their reality staples. Alas. I’ll even miss those dumb spoons.
