Survivor is destroying American Idol in the ratings

Survivor Worlds Apart lost 12 percent of its viewers 18 to 49 between this week and last, but the series still crushed American Idol–and basically all other shows on Wednesday night.

In Wednesday ratings, Survivor‘s 2.2 and 9.35 million viewers easily beat Fox’s American Idol, which had a 1.4 rating and 7.63 million viewers. The CBS competition tied ABC’s The Goldbergs in 18 to 49 but lost to CBS’ Criminal Minds among overall viewers.

Yes, even a weak season of Survivor that’s losing viewers week to week is now easily beating what once was the most-popular show on television. Idol has introduced a Twitter save It’s quite the reversal, especially for a show that’s in its 30th season.

Some people are DVRing Idol to watch later, and its ratings improve in live+3 ratings, when three days of DVR usage are factored in, but it’s still nowhere close to other reality series: American Idol came in at #21 (for the week ending April 5) while Survivor was #8 on all of broadcast television, The Voice was #3, and Dancing with the Stars was #14.

Last week, when Survivor faced off against both shows on Wednesday, it beat both of them. Again, impressive.
