The Comeback‘s frequently sad, even melancholy second season concluded last night, and while Valerie Cherish was followed by Jane and a documentary film crew throughout, this season was most assuredly not about documentaries in the way reality television provided the underlying story for season one. No, it was about much more, the brutality of Hollywood and the trade-offs we make in life in pursuit of what we think we want.
I recapped the finale (and the whole season) for HitFix, and I thought it was a very solid ending, despite a few cheats, like Jane not following Valerie out of the Emmys. I was surprised at how emotional it was, and really felt that moment when Valerie gets the text about Mickey and realizes she has to choose between the Emmys and her lifelong supporter. The finale was titled “Valerie Gets What She Really Wants,” and that came to represent both an Emmy and the two men who’ve supported her through everything, especially the humiliation that came from The Comeback The Reality Series.
Buzzfeed’s Kate Aurthur talked to Lisa Kudrow about the finale, and while the whole conversation is interesting, Kudrow says she and Michael Patrick King may soon “talk about what more would look like.” At the start of this new season, when it was really hammering at its season one beats and themes, I wouldn’t have thought another season possible, but with the finale giving us a hint of a new, evolving Valerie Cherish, I’m in.
