Todd Herzog on Dr. Phil: “I know that I need help”

Todd Herzog was on Dr. Phil for the third time today, an episode filmed one year to the day from his first, horrifying appearance.  Because this is Dr. Phil and Todd’s horrifying alcoholism and popularity can be dragged out for two episodes, the actual result of the intervention is being saved for tomorrow’s episode. Gross, piggish sexism on Survivor, this time with consequences

Survivor is no stranger to sexism from its host or players, but rarely has it been so blatant or gross as it was last night, and rarely does it result in such clear consequences–though, sadly, it was not for one of the people behaving badly, but the most threatening member of their alliance. The result was …

Andy Cohen sometimes feels bad about what he’s done

Andy Cohen was profiled on CBS Sunday Morning, the terrific newsmagazine show that rarely goes deep but is nearly always insightful, and Sunday it showed that the man who helped turn The Real Housewives franchise into an entire network’s focus and its own industry sometimes isn’t always pleased with what he’s done. He’s profiled by Erin Moriarty, …

The second half of The Comeback: from Charla to a puking cupcake

The Comeback returns tonight, and my attempt to break the rewatch over several weeks failed because when I did sit down to watch, I just kept watching. The problem with re-watching a phenomenal show that has just 13 half-hour episodes is that it’s easy to binge. While episodes one to four set up the season, and episode …

Shane Dawson on winning The Chair, Not Cool critics, Big Brother

Shane Dawson has won The Chair and $250,000, a coda tacked on to the ending of one of the best reality TV series I’ve ever watched. I talked to him about making Not Cool under the scrutiny of reality TV cameras, criticism of his work (including from Zachary Quinto), how fair the competition was considering his millions of followers on social …

Survivor’s Todd Herzog relapses, back on Dr. Phil

Survivor winner Todd Herzog’s appearance on Dr. Phil last year was disturbing, to say the least; he alcoholism made him barely coherent and barely recognizable. He was drinking 24 gallons of vodka every month. The show sent him to rehab and he returned months later, sober for 112 days. As the preview for Thursday’s episode of Dr. Phil …

Anna Martemucci on The Chair, directing, collaboration, creativity

Starz’ The Chair comes to an end tomorrow night, with either Anna Martemucci (“Hollidaysburg”) or Shane Dawson (“Not Cool”) winning $250,000. But despite that large prize, the contest has truly been secondary to the reality series’ extraordinary ability to capture the filmmaking process. I talked with Anna last night, and she offered a lot of candid insight about The Chair, its …

NBC made the return of The Sing-Off seem depressing

NBC’s much-better-than-it-sounds holiday competition series The Sing-Off will return this December, and that should be happy news, but it’s mostly said. That’s because judge Ben Folds won’t be returning, and the series has been reduced to a single two-hour special featuring six groups. The prize has also been reduced from $100,000 and a Sony recording contract to just $50,000. …
