Rolling Stone has published an excerpt from its upcoming cover story profile of American Idol 8 runner-up Adam Lambert that covers the one part everyone really wants to read: his official revelation that he’s gay. While that’ll only come as a surprise to some members of the media and way-too-devoted fans, Adam says, “I don’t think it should be a surprise for anyone to hear that I’m gay.” He also adds that he “like[s] dick,” so that should clear up any ambiguity—except he also talks about considering making out with women, so that fantasy can stay alive.
Gossip candy has scans of the full text, which isn’t online. In the rest of the article–which is definitely a must-read–he talks about his “psychedelic experience, what he thought about rooming with Kris Allen (“Oh, shit, they put me with the cute guy. Distracting! He’s the one guy that I found attractive in the whole group on the show.”), and what he thought when the pictures of him kissing guys came out (“I thought, ‘Fuck, I’m screwed, possibly'”).
When the photos came out, Adam said, “The head of Idol public relations asked me what I wanted to do about it. They were completely supportive of any decision I made. I was worried that [coming out] would be so sensationalized that it would overshadow what I was there to do, which was sing.”
Why did he wait this long to say something? “Right after the finale, I almost started talking about it to the reporters, but I thought, ‘I’m going to wait for Rolling Stone, that will be cooler. I didn’t want the Clay Aiken thing and the celebrity-magazine bullshit. I need to be able to explain myself in context.”
He doesn’t have anything to hide, though, not that most people thought he did. “I’m proud of my sexuality. I embrace it. It’s just another part of me. I’m trying to be a singer, not a civil rights leader,” he told the magazine. And talking about Clay Aiken, he added, “The only thing that’s the same about everyone in the gay community is that we’re gay. Do we have anything in common besides the fact that we like dick? Why can’t we just talk about a human community?”
