with two group slots open, is American Juniors “insufferable” or “refreshing”?
Disagreeing with The New York Times’ Frank Rich, who called American Juniors “Fox’s insufferable weekly tots’ talent contest,” and with viewers who have been steadily abandoning the show, Slate’s Ann Hulbert says it is “refreshing summer entertainment for the family.” She argues that “the low stakes … are the source of the show’s appeal” and that “all the Idol prime-time glitz hasn’t really managed to transform that timeless American favorite, the youth talent contest, very much.” So far, three group members (of an eventual five) have been selected: Taylor Thompson, Tori Thompson, and Chauncey Matthews.
