Wipeout sold to 17 territories, which all use its new set in Argentina
ABC’s summer hit Wipeout has now been sold to 17 different territories, and all of the non-U.S. productions will tape on the show’s new obstacle course in Argentina.
Most recently, “BBC1 in Blighty, Telecinco in Spain, RTL4 in the Netherlands and Channel 10 in Israel” picked up the show, according to Variety, and “ProSieben in Germany and MBC in the Middle East have also commissioned ‘Wipeout’ while Oz’s Nine Network has bought both the format and the readymade U.S. version.”
The director of sales for production company and distributor Endemol said, “The speed with which ‘Wipeout’ has been selling globally is quite phenomenal. Its success in the U.S. and Australia has intensified the rush to acquire the format and this international rollout looks set to continue.”
All of those new shows will use “Endemol’s Argentina-based set, which the company claims is the biggest TV obstacle course in the world,” Variety reports. However, the ABC series, which is now casting for its second season after being official renewed, will continue to be filmed at its course outside of Los Angeles.
In June, Endemol USA president David Goldberg told Worldscreen that they wanted to “replicate in Argentina what we’ve built in L.A with any alterations that various other countries may see appropriate,” he said. “We decided to move forward with [producing] in Argentina due to the considerable expense of shooting in the U.S. and their ability to gang shoot from multiple countries. It’s a model that we used back in the Fear Factor days to great results.”
