Next year, both the US and the UK could have politicians selected via reality TV shows. Showtime is airing American Candidate this summer, and now the UK’s ITV is planning Vote for Me, a show that will select someone who can then run for a seat in the House of Commons. Of course, you can run for Parliament (or President) anyway, but the shows offer lots of free face time. ITV’s web site for the show says that “volunteer entrants will only be eligible if they have no affiliation with any party that qualifies for party election broadcasts. An independent panel, free of party allegiance, will judge the entrants and select the final shortlist of ten.” The final 10 will be narrowed by audience votes. Those interested in applying can call or e.mail ITV for information.
