UK: “shows emerging at a rapid pace.”
Many, if not most, hit reality TV shows have been imports from overseas, particularly the UK. There, “new shows [are] emerging at a rapid pace,” the AP reports. An Evening Standard reporter says “Everybody’s predicting it’s going to peak. So far, it hasn’t. What’s beginning to happen is that people are beginning to be a bit more selective in their choice of reality shows.” Upcoming shows in the UK include Drop the Celebrity, which features parachute-wearing celebrities getting pushed out of a plane. The producer of NBC’s The Restaurant says that show is unlikely to be imported because “[t]he Brits love a loser, and we don’t embrace the ‘B’ celebrities they way they do. … America loves a winner.”
