The Stanford Prison Experiment becomes a reality TV show on the BBC.
An infamous 1971 study of prison life using Stanford University students will be reproduced for a BBC TV show called The Experiment. The Stanford Prison Experiment made nine students “guards” and nine others “inmates,” and in just six days, the experiment was stopped because “our guards became sadistic and our prisoners became depressed and showed signs of extreme stress,” according to Stanford’s Philip G. Zimbardo. Now, The BBC is advertising for a “university-backed social science experiment to be shown on TV”—a quasi-recreation of the experiment. They’re recruiting men only, and no prize will be offered.
