The third celebrity edition of the UK’s Big Brother includes a feminist icon—and a star of the US’ The Surreal Life 3. Germaine Greer joins Brigitte Nielsen and six other celebs in a house for 18 days, which began last Thursday and debuted on Channel 4 last night. The author of The Female Eunuch, Greer, as the AP points out, once wrote, “Watching Big Brother is about as dignified as looking through the keyhole in your teenage child’s bedroom door. Reality TV is not the end of civilisation as we know it; it is civilisation as we know it.” Now, she says she’s doing the show “to strike a blow for the old ladies.” The Sunday Times says this turn isn’t that strange: “She has spent the past 40 years doing the opposite of what was expected of her, no matter how many U-turns it might entail.” The paper hopes “she will unleash some of her lethal verbal invective. She called Victoria Beckham ‘a starved carnivore’ and described the writer of her unauthorised biography as ‘flesh- eating bacteria.’”
