A fight during the summer production of the UK’s Big Brother 5 led some viewers to call the police, and it has now resulted in a rebuke by Ofcom, the UK’s version of the FCC. The fight broke out after two sequestered houseguests reentered the house; in its report, Ofcom said, “The apparent absence of intervention by Channel 4 to prevent the situation escalating to this point, having ‘engineered’ the situation originally, clearly caused distress and offence to viewers.” According to The Guardian, Ofcom “rejected suggestions they had been exploited.” The agency wrote, “Considering the now well-known format of Big Brother, it is clear that participants know, to a greater or lesser degree, what they are letting themselves in for.”
