The UK’s Big Brother 5 concluded on Friday night, and Nadia—“a chain-smoking, cackling, Portuguese transsexual,” The Guardian says—was selected as the winner. The paper reports that the show received new life this year; “despite poorer initial ratings than last year, the viewing figures this series peaked at 7.7m.” That was largely due to the casting, which made conflict inevitable, but also due to factors such as the “oppressive feel” of the house, annoyances like being “woken up by the sound of crying babies,” and gross games, like the one that had the house guests “drink fish guts.”
