ArchivesStarting today, the Discovery Channel will air its 20th Shark Week, a series of documentaries and specials about sharks. For the first time, the network will air shark-related programming from 9 a.m. to 3 a.m. every day, for a total of “over 130 hours,” the network said in a press release.
On the occasion of the 20th Shark Week—the first aired in 1988—the Discovery Channel has released a four-DVD collection called Shark Week: 20th Anniversary Collection, which features 14 different Shark Week documentaries.
The week is hosted by Survivorman’s Les Stroud, who shows up during the 9 p.m. hour every night to debut eight new documentaries. They start tonight with “Ocean of Fear: Worst Shark Attack Ever,” a documentary about “the worst shark attack ever recorded - after the sinking of the U.S.S. Indianapolis in 1945,” according to the network. Monday at 9 is “Deadly Stripes: Tiger Sharks,” followed by “Top 5 Eaten Alive” at 10. “Shark Feeding Frenzy” debuts on Tuesday, “Perfect Predators” on Wednesday, “Shark Tribe” on Thursday, and “Sharks: A Family Affair” on Friday.
On Saturday, “Sharkman” debuts, and follows Michael Rutzen, who tries to “hypnotize, in open water … the great white shark.” Footage from that is included in this Shark Week trailer, which also previews the week’s other shows:
