Trading Spaces designer Hilda Santo-Tomas, renowned for her obliviousness and uncanny ability to permanently attach hundreds of ugly things to walls, says she exposes people to her brilliance because it was given to her at birth. Seriously. “The reason I do this show is I was given a gift when I was born,” she tells The Arizona Republic. That gift, surprisingly enough, was not crap smeared on her walls. “My gift is creativity. I’m not afraid to try anything.” Justifying her past designs, she presents some false dichotomies: “Putting flowers on the wall: Is that design or is it gardening? Putting baseball cards on a wall: Is that design or collecting?” Hildi Santo-Tomas: Lunatic or sadist?
