Trading Spaces spins off competition show; winners get mortgage paid off.
Trading Spaces is spawning again. In addition to the family version and kids’ version, TLC will now air Trading Spaces: Home Free. Unlike the other two spin-offs, which feature redesigns of rooms by drama queen designers, this is a “series that pits neighbor against neighbor in a tournament-style competition,” according to a TLC press release. “[H]omeowners [will] race to redesign their neighbors’ homes in the hopes of winning the ultimate grand prize—their mortgage paid off” also have to deal with “twists and turns including changes in budget, shifting deadlines and design detours not to mention our rotating cast of designers and carpenters.” And “viewers decide their fates each week by voting on who moves to the next phase of competition.” Paige Davis will host the new eight-episode series, which debuts Sunday, March 7 at 7; regular episodes air Sunday nights at 8. The show sounds oddly similar to USA Network’s House Wars, which is especially notable because the USA series is executive produced by Denise Cramsey, the former executive producer of Trading Spaces. Before leaving for unknown reasons, she took over the show and took it out of the Alex McLeod years and into the Paige Davis years, where it was twice nominated for an Emmy.
