I admit it: This is a self-link to a piece I wrote for Salon after spending three days on the set of the Houston: Appalachian Trail episode of Trading Spaces last spring. Despite the title, the essay is about how reality is constructed on the show, and why such manipulation is not necessarily a bad thing.
