restaurateur says lawsuit-serving “scene outside the restaurant was staged.”
The scene in the debut episode of The Restaurant where Rocco DiSpirito’s manager Jeffrey Chodorow is served with a lawsuit “was staged,” another restaurateur says. John McDonald owns Canteen, the restaurant located in the space Rocco wanted for his restaurant; in the episode, Rocco and Jeffrey show up at the space, and then Jeffrey is served with a lawsuit from McDonald for “[trying] to interfere with his negotiations to buy out his partner in Canteen.” But according to McDonald’s rep, although the lawsuit is real, “Rocco knew at all times he would never get that space. He did it for fake drama, to fool the public. He was grandstanding. … The scene outside the restaurant was staged.” Mark Burnett says, “Nothing was faked. We were really going to buy Canteen. Rocco was certain he would get it, and was set on it. The process held up production for months.”
