Real World Philly is working to “define the city as a gay-friendly destination.”
Having two openly gay men as a part of The Real World Philadelphia’s cast is a first for the MTV series, although there have been multiple gay cast members before, such as bisexual Ruthie and gay Justin in The Real World Hawaii, or, if we’re being honest, most of the cast of The Real World Seattle. Anyway, according to the Philadelphia Inquirer, the presence of two gay men on the show “is reinforcing a message that the city’s tourism officials also have been promoting this year: Philadelphia is gay-friendly.” The series is helping to “define the city as a gay-friendly destination,” the founder of Philadelphia’s Equality Forum says. However, the publisher of the Philadelphia Gay News says that it’s not all gay and merry, notably because of Landon and MJ: “In all honesty, the dialogue, at least among the nongays talking about their two gay roommates, is like some unsophisticated hick from the boondocks lost in the big city.”
