The Hills will end after its fifth season, whatever that is
The Hills, the Laguna Beach spin-off that became a phenomenon bigger than its parent, will end after its fifth season, although that may or may not refer to the alleged bonus fourth-season episodes that start at some undetermined time in March. So much mystery!
In an ambiguously written sentence, People cites a Seventeen magazine profile of Lauren and reports that “the show’s upcoming fifth season (season 4 bonus episodes will premiere in March) will be [Lauren’s] last.”
At first glance, that seems to suggest there will be bonus fourth-season episodes, and then a future fifth season. But that parenthetical could also be read as referring directly to the “upcoming fifth season,” as in, the two are actually synonymous.
I may just be confusing myself, but at least others agree: For example, Zap2it reports that “this Spring’s batch of season four bonus episodes will actually serve as The Hills’ swan song.”
Whenever it comes, why will the fifth season be the end? Because Lauren’s tired. “My biggest thing with the show was that I wanted to walk away from it while it’s still a great thing. I always want to remember it that way. I gave MTV a deadline and said, ‘This is as long as I can do it and stay sane,’” Lauren told Seventeen magazine, according to People.
The trailer for the continuation of the fourth season and the show’s executive producer have both made references to the eventual end of the series, so this isn’t a huge surprise. And with The City (which was renewed for a second season) and whatever spin-off Heidi and Spencer wrangle from MTV, the franchise isn’t going anywhere soon.
