An Italian American group is upset with ABC’s The Family, which it says “inexcusably stereotypes Italian Americans.” A statement from the Order Sons of Italy in America says the show “undermines the only positive stereotype identified with Italian Americans: their love for each other and loyalty to the family.” The group is posting advertisers’ names and contact information and is “ask[ing] Italian Americans and others who are offended by this series to express their views to the companies.” According to the New York Post, the network “denies it intended to portray Italian-Americans negatively. It just came out that way, a network spokesman said.”
