Stallone says “NBC is not giving up” on The Contender and compares it to Rocky.
Despite tepid ratings, Sylvester Stallone says definitively that “NBC is not giving up” on The Contender. To help spark interest, the series will air a recap episode Sunday at 7 p.m. ET that includes Stallone, Sugar Ray Leonard, and the winners discussing the first four fights. Stallone tells TV Guide that they “really love this show,” and compares it to the film that made him a star. “The odd thing is, this is how the first Rocky started off. [Producers] Irwin Winkler and Robert Chartoff took this canister of film to people’s homes and created a buzz—because nobody wanted to see an unknown in a boxing film that was done for under $1 million.” (Of course, each episode of The Contender costs $2 million.) Sugar Ray says, “Based upon what we have been up against, with the other networks doing everything they can to break us down, we stayed strong.”
