De La Hoya rejected The Contender because it’s a “tough-man contest.”
Oscar De La Hoya turned down NBC and Mark Burnett’s offer to star in The Contender, and then turned around and created a similar show, The Next Great Champ, which originally turned down Burnett’s show. De La Hoya says he rejected The Contender because it is a “(glorified) tough-man contest” that doesn’t focus on skill. “It can be any person off the street—it can’t be real fighting. It takes talent to fight,” he tells Scripps Howard. About the controversy, he says, “This is going to bring visibility to our sport and open some eyes. Our show is coming out in November and their show is coming out a little later. I think that there’s enough pie out there for everyone.”
