The series also had only a 2.5 share among adults 18 to 49, which Media Life says is “shockingly low. … Many media people expected ‘Stewart’ to win her timeslot among 18-49s this season if not post stunning numbers. That looks like it may not happen after week one.”
Martha’s major competition was a Lost recap special on ABC, which was watched by 14.6 million people. An NBC spokesperson told Reuters, “The numbers are clearly not where we wanted them to be with the premiere. But the competitive landscape was an unusual one, and you’ve got to hang in there.”
