The ninth season of the Show that Changed it All starts tonight as CBS debuts Survivor Vanuatu at 8 p.m. ET. The series is subtitled “Islands of Fire” because of its location in the volcanic South Pacific nation of Vanuatu (SurvivorMaps has a map and satellite photo of the island both tribes will share). The cast will be split by sex at first, but what happens after that is anybody’s guess. Following in the footsteps of its retarded CBS reality TV show cousin Big Brother, the series will be accompanied by an online talk show, hosted by season one winner Richard Hatch and Entertainment Tonight’s Chris Booker. The hour-long show, Survivor Live, will air Thursdays and Fridays at 2 p.m. ET/11 p.m. PT; Jeff Probst guests on today’s debut edition. Speaking of, in an interview with Zap2it.com, our venerable host discusses the season—and reveals the nature of the opening ritual that the previews tease, promising that a certain organization will be up Mark Burnett’s ass faster than you can say “Michael Skupin killed a drugged pig.” He also admits that the series has become somewhat formulaic (“If you can’t mock ‘Survivor’ at this point, you’ve got no wit”) and also is candid about this season, which he says has no villain. “I think this is going to be a good season, but honestly I don’t know.” Reviews of the show confirm that it’s “stuff we’ve seen so many times before” that’s “comfortably familiar - and understandably durable.”
