Indiana gubernatorial candidate and Survivor Rupert comes out for marriage equality

Survivor cast member Rupert Boneham, who’s running for governor in Indiana as a libertarian, released a video over the weekend detailing his support for marriage equality for gay and lesbian people, and vowing to fight legislation that does otherwise.

In the video, below, Rupert talks about his 14-year marriage and says, “we’ve had our hardships, we’ve had our trials, but nothing like the LGBT community has to go through,” and adds, “What does it say to the youth of Indiana when a whole segment of our society is treated like second-class citizens?”

Later, he says, “I promise to fight and block HJR6” (which is a bill in Indiana that would define marriage as between a man and a woman only), and “fight to repeal Indiana [Defense of Marriage Act.” He also says, “I will fight for the LGBT community.” As Back2Stonewall notes, the Republican and Democratic candidates appear to oppose same-sex marriage, and a statement like this definitely makes Rupert the most progressive candidate, at least on this issue.
