Richard Hatch staying in prison, maybe until Oct. 26

Today, a judge denied Richard Hatch’s request to be returned to home confinement after the Survivor winner was sent back to jail after talking to the media without permission.

He may be there longer than he would have been before: “The judge also said prison officials can discipline Hatch by taking away nine days of good time” so “he won’t get out until Oct. 16,” The AP reports.

The ACLU supported Hatch’s request to be released, arguing he was re-imprisoned as punishment for exercising his right to free speech, and today spokesperson Christopher Ott said, “We understood that there might be valid security concerns when you’re talking about a prison facility where you can’t have the media coming in, but that’s not the case when you’re dealing with someone in home confinement.”
