Richard Hatch sentenced to more than four years in prison for lying “repeatedly”

The very thing which helped Richard Hatch win $1 million on Survivor has just earned him 4.25 years in prison: lying.

Earlier today, Hatch “was ordered to serve 51 months in prison after U.S. District Chief Judge Ernest C. Torres concluded that he had commited perjury during his trial and also lied to probation officials,” the Providence Journal reports. He will then have three years of probation plus counseling. All of this follows his conviction in January on tax evasion and other charges.

At the sentencing, Hatch said, “I believe I’ve been completely truthful and completely forthcoming throughout the entire process.” The judge, however, said Richard is “in denial” and “lied in his testimony to this court and did so repeatedly.”

The Providence Journal reports that he “smiled after hearing his sentence.”
