Richard Hatch didn’t pay taxes on his $1 million because “he is the world’s worst bookkeeper,” his lawyer said during opening statements in Richard’s trial.
Richard’s “attorney, Michael Minns, argued Thursday that Hatch was struggling with his newfound fame after winning the contest, was overwhelmed by false child abuse charges and was relying on the advice of a self-employed accountant who was ‘in over her head,’” according to the AP..
The assistant U.S. attorney, however, said “[t]he evidence will show the defendant failed to report substantial amounts of money that he knew he was supposed to … and he intentionally decided not to.”
Richard’s lawyer promised that the Survivor winner will testify. “I’m going to tell you right now so everyone will know, you will hear directly from Richard Hatch. He will take the witness stand,” the lawyer told the jury, according to the Providence Journal’s account
