Jury selection begins for Richard Hatch’s trial, which starts tomorrow

Richard Hatch was in a US district court yesterday for jury selection in his trial, which starts tomorrow. Last year, he “was indicted on 10 counts of tax evasion, filing false income-tax returns, and mail, bank and wire fraud. The maximum sentence he could face is 30 years in prison and a $1-million fine,” according to the Providence Journal.

The Survivor winner introduced himself by saying, “Hi everybody, I’m Richard Hatch.” In court, “most potential jurors interviewed by [Judge] Torres said they had watched episodes of the first season of CBS’ Survivor in 2000,” the Providence Journal reports. One potential juror said she remembered “the way he dressed.” Of course, Richard is best known for being the fat naked gay contestant who forever altered the game of Survivor with his alliance strategy.

The paper outlined his lawyers’ strategy, asking a juror if a person “can file an incorrect return” and suggesting “that the ‘events right before the filing of this return and after’ will help defend Hatch’s actions.” Those events include his arrest on charges of child abuse, which were later dropped.
