So You Think You Can Dance

Fourth season of So You Think You Can Dance debuts tonight

Fox isn’t giving us even one night to take a break from talent search shows, debuting So You Think You Can Dance 4 tonight at 8 p.m. ET. It airs Wednesdays and Thursdays, and audition episodes will fill the time between now and June 4, and the top 20 will finally perform June 11.

Nigel Lythgoe and Mary “wooooooo!” Murphy return as judges, and Cat Deeley hosts. Viewers will vote starting with the top 20, although as before, the judges eliminate people during the semi-final rounds, selecting from those who had the fewest number of votes. The winner gets $250,000.

While I avoided the show for two years, I tuned in last year and was immediately won over by the show’s incredible talent. Compared to American Idol, I’m convinced it’s better and solves Idol’s problems. Among other things, it has better judges (rotating in a choreographer as judge every week makes a significant difference) and talent that’s a lot more entertaining to watch. And allowing the judges to narrow the group during the semi-final rounds ensures that no Sanjayas end up in the top 10.
