Real L Word will return, focusing on Whitney; male prostitute series coming to Showtime, too

Showtime’s reality series The Real L Word will return for a second season this summer, but will become “more premium, more exclusive” as it focuses on Whitney Mixter and her friends. Meanwhile, the network is working on a series that follows straight male prostitutes in Las Vegas called Gigolos.

The network’s president, David Nevins, told TV critics Friday that they “were the most authentic young 20 something lesbians in Los Angeles. I think we can do a better job of capturing that subculture and go deeper. So it definitely seemed worth doing a second season.” He suggested that season one wasn’t that great, saying, “sometimes, with those reality shows, you get it right year two, and that’s that’s what it was about.”

During the Q&A, he revealed that Showtime is “doing this show Gigolos, which is surprisingly fascinating, male escorts—a group of guys who are male escorts in Vegas. I actually find the show quite fascinating, and I think it’s not new territory for Showtime, but I think we are doing it in a way that really complements the sophisticated stuff that we do with our with our comedies and dramas.”

He didn’t offer any details about what the series will show, exactly, but someone asked if they’ll be straight or gay prostitutes, and Nivins said they’re straight.
