INXS pitched Rock Star to Mark Burnett.
Australian rockers INXS went to Mark Burnett with the idea of searching for a new lead singer through a reality TV show. INXS, whose lead singer Michael Hutchence killed himself in 1997, “wanted to search the world for a new singer, but didn’t know how we could effectively do that,” member Tim Farriss told The Herald Sun. According to the paper, they’ll “audition singers on five continents” and “work with hopefuls on new material,” eventually touring with the new band member. First, they will “relocate to the United States later this year.” Mark Burnett said he is “a long-time fan of INXS and feel[s] very fortunate that they approached us with this idea and have entrusted us with their future.” Burnett says there’s “‘a bidding frenzy’ between major US networks NBC, CBS and ABC”—but not FOX, whose American Idol is the model/target of the new series.
