Jokes President Obama and Jimmy Kimmel told about Kim Kardashian and Donald Trump
President Barack Obama made a few jokes about reality TV stars last night at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, as did host Jimmy Kimmel. Obama’s jokes weren’t as scathing as his more targeted attack last year, and Kim Kardashian—who was in the audience along with several reality TV star guests—was the most frequent reality TV star target, though the president joked as many times about recent attacks related to a confession in his 1995 memoir (“a pit bull is delicious”; “my stepfather always told me, it’s a boy-eat-dog world out there”).
At the beginning, before Obama came out, he mocked his own recent accidental mic via a voice-over, during which he said, “I have the nuclear codes. Why am I telling knock-knock jokes to Kim Kardashian. Why is she famous, anyway?”
During his set/routine/speech, President Obama referenced the fact that a year ago, on the same weekend as the dinner, he ordered the SEAL Team 6 raid during which Osama bin Laden was killed, Obama said, “we finally delivered justice to one of the world’s most notorious individuals.” He never said bin Laden’s name, though, and monitors in the ballroom showed an image of Donald Trump, a reference to this.
Kimmel later referenced the same anniversary, after mentioning Kim Kardashian earlier (“for those of you who aren’t familiar with this story—Kim, Lindsay [Lohan], et cetera”). He said, “So who will it be this year? If you’re looking for the biggest threat to America right now, she’s right there. Her name is Kim Kardashian; she was captured by Greta van Susteren and brought right to your doorstep. You know, when you took office, the Kardashians had one reality show. Now they have four. This is not a good trend. Right now Navy SEAL Team 6 is outside the Kardashian compound in Beverly Hills, disguised as the Denver Nuggets so they can sneak in undetected.”
Although the joke compared her to a wanted terrorist killed by the military, Kim appeared to be amused—at least, she didn’t seem anything like Trump last year, who looked absurdly uncomfortable. Barbara Walters seemed the most uncomfortable/humorless this year when Kimmel joked that, 16 years ago, “a tweet was something Barbara Walters gave her dog.”
