reality TV ratings fall “at a much faster rate” compared to scripted shows.
Ratings for reality TV shows may make headlines, but TV Week reports that “[r]eality show ratings have declined at a much faster rate than those of scripted shows this season, according to a recent report by media agency Mediaedge:cia in New York.” The raw details: “reality programs have dropped 15 percent in the adults 18 to 49 demographic this season through March 16” while “[s]cripted network shows dropped 9 percent in adults 18 to 49 season.” Among reality TV shows, “CBS is up 12 percent in reality adult 18 to 49 ratings; NBC is 8 percent improved; ABC is off 21 percent; and Fox is down 24 percent.” FOX dropped largely because of Joe Millionaire 2. A researcher for Mediaedge says, “All reality is not the same. You have to look at all of them-and then break them apart. There are a couple of shows that drive the genre and are given all the buzz.”
+ plus: editor of TV Guide quits, citing, in part, reality TV: “I’m not into living the world of reality television for another year.”
