top searches in reality TV 2003.
It may be 2004, but the 2003 year-end lists are still coming. Most recently, major search engines announced what terms and phrases were most recently searched for on their sites. In terms of reality TV shows, there isn’t much of a consensus. The 2003 Year-End Google Zeitgeist shows no reality TV-related terms among its top 10 popular queries, news searches, or image searches, but in Australia, Australian Idol was the number one most searched-for term on Google. The Simple Life star Paris Hilton did make Google’s list in two different countries, landing at number nine in the UK and number two in Canada. Paris was much more popular among Yahoo users, as Yahoo’s Top Searches 2003 lists her as the eighth most popular search term. Yahoo also helpfully separates out searches for the 10 most frequently searched for reality TV shows, finding that American Idol was the most popular, followed by Survivor, Joe Millionaire, Paradise Hotel, and The Bachelor. Over at Lycos, Aaron Shatz’s Lycos 50 for 2003 shows Paris at number four, with searches for Clay Aiken coming in at number 24—well above American Idol, which landed at number 30. Ruben may have won the show, but he doesn’t even make the list. In Lycos’ list of top 2003 TV searches, American Idol is number one, with The Simpsons and Buffy both beating the number four Survivor. That was also true for whoever uses AOL, as Idol led AOL’s list of TV shows, and also landed at number 16 on the AOL Top Search Terms list, well above number 25’s occupant, the ubiquitous Paris Hilton.
